Urban Edible Description:

Urban Edible designs and maintains several edible/ornamental production gardens in Chicago. These gardens produce high end specialty produce for Chicago restaurants as well as provide outdoor living and entertaining spaces.

Our most extensive project, the Bayless Gardens, consists of a large (3 city lot) residential site with lushly planted and maintained ornamental gardens along with an intensive year-round production garden system including raised beds, unheated and heated greenhouses, indoor grow rooms and deck gardens. Other projects include restaurant rooftop food gardens and patio plantings as well as indoor production gardens. All gardens are organically managed and feature extensive plant propagation and compost operations.

Assistant urban grower position description

We are looking for assistant growers that are currently, or aspire to be, full-time professional urban gardeners. Urban Edible is providing paid positions that include on the job training to qualified candidates (see candidate requirements below). This is a year-round position and, due to extensive training required, we are seeking individuals that desire a long-term position.

Candidates must be available to work 6 hours on Mondays and on at least two other days per week. Full-time seasonal work may be available to highly qualified individuals.  Compensation will be based on skill level.  

Candidate Requirements

Training and/or Academic background in commercial food production, horticulture, botany, or landscape design.

Minimum 2 years, hands-on experience in any of the above areas.  

Ability to work outdoors year-round in a variety of conditions.

Excellent communication skills

Ability to work at an established work pace.
