Solstice Family Farm Internship in WA
Solstice Family Farm Internship from February through November 2020 in Chimacum, Washington
SOLSTICE FAMILY FARM INTERNSHIP INFORMATION
General Farm Description: Solstice Family Farm is located on 33 acres on the Olympic Peninsula. We are a homestead style farm, where we not only grow vegetables, fruit, eggs and animals for market, but obtain much of what we need right from the land. We teach a variety of growing techniques (vegetables, fruit, meat and eggs), orcharding, pasture management, animal husbandry and a long list of other skills needed on a farm. We are a farm that has changed hands from one generation to the next. We are beginning our 9th year working with our elder farmers Jim and Linda who now run the Bed and Breakfast here.
Internship Starts: Around February 1st, 2020
Internship Ends: Around November 30th, 2020 (or longer)
Number of Internship Available: 1-2
Application Deadline: ASAP, Accepting until positions are filled.
Email: solsticefamilyfarm@gmail.com for an application.
Minimum Length of Stay: Entire Season (through November 30th, 2020 or longer)
Around here, the view is always changing. We will be getting our hands dirty growing vegetables, tending the berry patch, and maintaining the apple orchard. We have 200 chickens that need to be fed and have eggs to collect. There is small flock of sheep that is tended to on a daily basis, primarily the feeding of hay and turning out into the pastures. During the spring and summer months we raise approximately 20 pigs that get fed and watered 3 times a day. There are always fences that need mending, poop that needs to be shoveled, weeds that need to be weeded, and a million other things that haven’t let themselves be known yet.
Housing & Other Opportunities: In exchange for 21 hours of labor and 4-8 hours of feeding/chores per week, we provide a studio apartment with a kitchen and bathroom OR a comfy RV/trailer with a working shower/kitchen/heater. We offer a wide diversity of hands-on educational opportunities in sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry. We also provide a row in the vegetable garden for you to experiment and grow your own veggies. Also, we like to share in the farms surpluses, this often translates into extra apples, pears, plums, squash, parsnips, berries, pumpkins, eggs, etc. Lastly, we offer interns WA state Labor & Industries insurance/workers comp coverage. We believe the remainder of the week can be used to obtain part-time employment in our community and explore the beauty of the Olympic Peninsula. No dogs, cats or children please.
Educational Opportunities: There are ample opportunities to learn how to grow vegetables and fruits in our ancient peat soil and how to tend, prune, and cultivate a beautiful orchard. Our ewes give birth every spring which provides many exciting opportunities to explore sheep breeding, birth and general health. All our animals need a watchful eye, so one will learn how to spot a sick or injured animal and how to treat them accordingly. There are always a variety of projects that will require a wide diversity of building, fencing and problem solving skills. We offer a look at our unique farm finance, bookkeeping and marketing strategies as well. We can be of service and show you what we know in all these departments.
Skills Desired: Above all, a strong work ethic and a willingness to get your hands dirty will get you far on this farm. Those with an inquisitive nature, good observation skills and a desire to learn new skills will do well. Having a POSITIVE ATTITUDE, team building skills and the ability to take initiative are super helpful attributes as well!
Meals: From time to time we all get together to share a meal or have tea time, especially after working together after a long day. All other meals you will be on your own.
