Harlan Grains is a hiring a Small Grains Researcher to run our 10.5 acre heritage grain research farm in the 2019 and 2020 growing seasons.

Sprowt Labs is a technology and manufacturing startup providing a platform of technology, seeds, and knowledge to accelerate the growth of craft beer’s supply chain.
Harlan Grains is a Sprowt Labs project searching for new beer flavors by reviving heritage grain varieties. Over the last 3 seasons, we have been building a growing pipeline to build seedstock from 5 gram samples to commercially viable seed.
We grow organically in small plots that range from 6 sq ft to ¼ acre in scale. In 2019, we will be growing around 75 varieties of barley, wheat, oats, rye, buckwheat, sorghum, and Kernza near Northfield. Agronomic data is tracked throughout the growing season, and agronomically promising varieties are malted and analyzed for flavor qualities. This position is a part of a 2 year research grant working with farmers, brewers, and chefs in Minnesota.

Pay & Time frame:
$15/hour, 1,180 hours/year. Ideally this is a 2 year+ position.
Start date:
April, 2019.
Location:
The job will take place in two locations: Northfield and Burnsville, Minnesota.
Must-have experience:
2 years+ farm experience
Experience conducting agriculture research
– Background in agronomy, breeding, seed, or plant pathology
– Self-motivated, organized, good communicator, attentive to efficiency and detail
Nice to have experience:
– Experience with spreadsheets and data collection
– Experience repairing machinery
– Have operated of tractors or other farm equipment
– Have grown small grains before, at any scale
Small Grains Researcher Job Responsibilities:
– Assist in plot planning
– Lead planting, weeding, harvesting, and processing of grain
– Lead malt production
– Collect and organize agronomic and malting data
– Assist with conducting tasting panels on MN brewers and chefs
– Farm equipment upkeep and repairs
– Some hours completed at Sprowt Labs, possibly in production, marketing, general operations, etc. depending on candidate’s experience and interests.
