Sandy Brook Farm is hiring a farm generalist for the 2018 season in Wisconsin

Sandy Brook Farm is a perennial-based farm located in the Suamico area north of Green Bay, WI. We have a herd of beef, a flock of sheep, as well as hogs and poultry alongside cold-hardy fruit. The farm’s growth and expansion is allowing us to hire one additional full-time position beginning this 2018 season. We are looking for a farm generalist to assist in the day-to-day operations of the farm.

Sandy Brook Farm was established in 2013, currently operating 340 non-contiguous acres with a beef herd of Red Devon and Belted Galloway, a flock of Katahdin sheep, and three breeds of swine (Tamworth, Red Wattle, and Large Black) as well as poultry.

Though we have chosen not to have our animals certified organic, we actively practice these methods and feed our pigs and chickens certified organic grains. Our beef and lamb are grass-raised and grass-finished, never consuming grain. Our hogs and chickens are always pastured and are fed a supplementary ration daily.

Our animals are never given hormones or fed GMOs and we don’t apply herbicides, fungicides or pesticides on our land.

Duties and responsibilities would include:
• Tending to livestock (beef, pigs, lamb, chicken and turkey)
• Infrastructure maintenance
• Planting of both annual & perennial crops and plants
• Perennial berry planting, maintenance, and harvesting
• Tree planting and pruning
• Mulching
• An annual garden
• Bee keeping
• Farmer’s Market sales

Future additional tasks throughout the season at Sandy Brook Farm may include:
• Tapping a sugar bush (Maple syrup production)
• Woodlot management
• Forest farming (mushrooms, edibles, etc.)

Experience in a greenhouse, working with compost, livestock integration and orchards are a plus, but not necessary…though this person needs to be willing to learn. This position is physically demanding. It will require the ability to: lift 50-60 lbs., tend to animals, communicate with others, tolerate inclement weather, and work weekends on a rotational basis. This position is seasonally weighted with hours, but we will carry these individuals through the winter with work.

Compensation will be determined by the experience of the applicant. Contact Jason at Sandy Brook Farm @ (920) 503-0063 for instructions on how to apply for this opening.
