Here’s the latest news from the Center for Rural Affairs on Farming and Rural Community issues, August 2012:
High Poverty Rates Persist on the Great Plains: The Center’s newest Census report, Poverty on the Great Plains, shows poverty rates are higher in rural portions of 10 Midwest/Plains states. A lack of economic opportunity and low-wage jobs are culprits. Learn more.
Conservation in the Farm Bill: The farm bill considered by the full Senate in late June lacked some important provisions. One was linking basic conservation requirements to federal crop insurance subsidies. Fortunately, Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) took the lead to fix it. Read more.
Rural Development in the Farm Bill: Rural communities won some relief from deep funding cuts when the farm bill went before the full Senate late in June. Rural development programs have been slashed by 1/3 since 2003. As it orignally emerged from the Agriculture Committee, the Senate farm bill would have made it much worse. Click for more.
