Round Right Farm Seeks Asst. Mgr. – WV
Round Right Farm is seeking an Assistant Farm Manager
One year experience growing diversified vegetables on a working farm is required.
This is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $12/hr. On-farm housing and utilities are included.
The Round Right Farm Assistant Farm Manager will be working directly with the farm owners (we’re also the managers) in any and all of the various tasks associated with running a local produce farm and delivery business. We’re looking for someone with at least one year of experience growing organic vegetables for market who knows the work rhythms of vegetable life and understands the need to be flexible in scheduling and is eager to put in a long day when the weather is right. That being said, the assistant farm manager will have many responsibilities that are unrelated to weather. We’ve grown to the point where two owner/operators are not enough to effectively manage the farm. We’re looking for someone who can quickly learn our systems, make themselves indispensable to the farm, offer new insights, and help us continue to thrive. This position has advancement potential to become the Farm Manager.
Round Right Farm raises a wide variety of organic vegetables which are marketed to the Morgantown, WV and Oakland, MD areas through a 300+ member year-round Farm Share Subscription program (aka CSA). Our online market (based on in-house custom software) gives subscribers a wide variety of choice in what they receive each week from the farm as well as offers a wide variety of products from other producers in our region. We deliver to various drop spots and subscriber’s homes approx. 40 weeks out of the year.
There will be a wide variety of work with the plants in the fields and high-tunnels. We look forward to a candidate that can bring their own passion, experience, techniques, and ideas to help improve the quality of what we offer. We also seek a candidate that appreciates farm productivity. We constantly seek to improve our systems so that both the work can feel easier for us and that we can keep our prices in line with what customers can afford.
Round Right Farm employs H2A visa workers from Chiapas, Mexico from mid-April through November. We are looking for a candidate with some knowledge of the Spanish language who is excited about the opportunity to practice communicating in Spanish, even if they are far from fluent. We are also open to considering candidates with no knowledge of Spanish, as long as they are willing to actively practice during work hours as well as study it on their own time. We are happy to provide coaching and advice in the language acquisition process.
The Round Right Farm Assistant Farm Manager should have a clean driving record and feel comfortable driving a 14′ box truck in varying weather conditions, as well as using only mirrors to back into tight spaces. Most weeks of the year, you will run the delivery route to Morgantown once or twice a week, so comfortability with truck driving is important.
Another main responsibility will be pack-shed logistics. Our wide variety of produce (both from our fields and from other producers) has differing needs for how it is handled. Getting everything quickly processed, inventoried and in the right place is essential to getting the orders right for our customers when we pack their boxes. We’re looking for someone who prides themselves on their organizational skill. Knowing your way around a Windows computer will also prove helpful.
One month’s vacation is available during the winter months. This can be all at once or spread out some time from Mid-November through March. One week of this vacation will be paid (40hrs). We also offer 5 unpaid sick/personal days a year that healthy people can also use for a mid-season vacation.
Housing is provided on the farm. Utilities include electricity, gas, great spring water, and high-speed internet.
