Pastured Chickens for Free Range Eggs – Upper Midwest CRAFT Field Day – August 17th, 2021

Pastured Chickens for Free Range Eggs

Join us for a tour of Ten Men Farm, where Andy and Kate Larson rotationally graze about 600 ‘Red Star’ laying hens on three acres of pasture.  They raise farm-fresh brown eggs for local restaurants and retail stores, as well as one farmers market.

See two different types of stationary coops and related equipment, plus their egg-handling setup with small commercial egg washer and candler/grader.

Come with your questions, and expect discussions around pastured production, niche marketing, and financial decision-making.

Meet Your Farm Hosts

Andy & Kate returned to Pecatonica in late 2013, renovated a chicken coop, and started selling eggs locally the following summer. Andy grew up on a family farm just down the road, while Kate was raised near Pittsburgh, PA. They met in college, and got married after grad school. Andy has been an extension educator and an ag lender, and is currently working as a farm financial consultant for the Food Finance Institute and Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in the University of Wisconsin system. Kate has been a zookeeper and a science teacher, and is currently delivering eggs and raising three young daughters on Ten Men Farm.
