Two Paid Farm Interns Wanted at ShireFolk Farm in Virginia – 2020

ShireFolk Farm in Palmyra, VA looking for 2 paid farm interns this 2020 season!  We grow Certified Naturally Grown produce and mushrooms and rpastured-raised, GMO-free meat chickens, laying hens, Thanksgiving turkeys and lamb.  We sell at several farmers markets in Richmond and to a few restaurants and groceries in the Richmond area.  We are looking for young, enthusiastic farmers that enjoy working and living in a rural setting and want to learn all about how to sustainably produce meat and vegetables.  More detailed information and application instructions can be found on our website at: http://www.shirefolkfarm.com/join-the-team.html

This is a 40 hr/wk 5 days/wk position, occasionally less, occasionally more.  We will ask a lot out of our interns, especially during chicken processing days.  Turkey processing before Thanksgiving is our busiest week of the year, so interns must be able to stay through the end of November.  We pay $600/month, and room and board is included as an additional part of your compensation.  We eat incredibly well here!  No one goes hungry, and if you’re interested in learning about food skills, we’ve got lots to share.  We are able to source the majority of our meat and vegetables from ourselves or our farming community and we take price in our meals!  Living quarters are rustic “glamping” setups in our back 30, with a composting toilet and outdoor shower on-site.

In general, you can expect to learn what (and why) you’re doing, not just how to do it.  We strive to make this experience as educational as possible. The purpose of this internship is to give inexperienced farmers the strategies and information to move onward and upward in the world of agriculture.  Like any other opportunity, you get out what you put in.  There’s a lot to learn if you’re wiling!  Additionally, interns who are self-motivated may also be able to earn a Permaculture Design Certificate in collaboration with the Shenandoah Permaculture Institute as a part of their time here, but this relies heavily on the motivation of the individual.

We operate very much as a mini intentional community and have weekly check-ins as a group, monthly check-ins with your farm mentor (a returning intern or farm owner), and morning meetings to get everyone on the same page.  We stress communication in everything that we do.

We are accepting applications until positions are filled, but our preferred deadline is 2/15/20.  If you would like to be one of our paid farm interns, visit http://www.shirefolkfarm.com/join-the-team.html where you will find detailed information about what you can expect to learn specifically, as well as skills and experience we like to see in our intern applicants.  We hope to hear from you!
