Market Garden Manager Job Opportunity on Organic Farm in Illinois
‘The Gentleman Farmer’ is an established small, organic farm located in Barrington, Illinois. Serving CSA, farmer’s market and wholesale customers in Barrington and Chicago for the past 5 years, we are now reestablishing ourselves as an intensive Market Garden and destination farm.
Position – Market Garden Manager
Anticipated Employment Term – On-going, full-time.
Hours – 50 – 55 per week during peak summer months, 30 – 35 during off-season winter months.
Compensation – Wages negotiable.
Duties and Responsibilities –
Manage and run a 1.5 acre Intensive Market Garden.
Working with Head Farmer/Owner in mapping season, crop plan, seed purchase, schedule etc.
All practical, hands-on gardening/farming work – bed preparation, seeding, sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing, packing etc.
Attend and run a minimum number of Farmer’s Markets, including Sundays.
Maintain the farm to a high standard, manage volunteers and visitors, produce to schedules and deadlines.
Skills –
Knowledge and use of small, hand and gardening tools including hoes, spades, forks etc.
Knowledge and use of Market Garden-scale mechanized equipment, including walk-behind tractors, roto-tillers, power harrows, weed-wackers, fogger/misters etc.
All practical, hands-on gardening/farming work – bed preparation, seeding, sowing, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, washing, packing etc.
Driving license – ability to drive a 16’ market Box Truck and pick-up truck.
Ability to work independently, remain self-motivated, and take responsibility for decision-making, innovation and improvisation when required.
Experience –
The successful applicant will have –
Worked a minimum 2 full seasons (18 months) in a Intensive Market Garden system, as outlined in the works of Elliot Coleman (“The New Organic Grower”), Jean-Martin Fourtier (“The Market Gardener”) and Ben Hartman (“The Lean Farm”)
Managed a minimum of 20 Farmers Markets (loaded, set–up, ran, cash handling, dismantled etc.)
Personality –
Outgoing, bright and personable, they will easily get along with others, and thoroughly enjoy working outside and with nature. They will be reliable and dependable.
