Organic Flower and Vegetable Farm in Virginia – Internships
Stonecrop Farm, located in the mountains of southwest Virginia, seeks an intern (or two) for the 2015 growing season. A certified organic flower and vegetable farm, they are offering an opportunity to live on site and participate in all aspects of production — from seed to sale. Learn soil building, vegetable production, record keeping, cut flower growing, bouquet making, hoophouse applications, marketing and sales. They are also interested in finding someone to actively participate in full-service wedding flowers.
The intern(s) would work one-on-one with the farmer/owners every day as well as meet the chefs, brides, and market customers. Stonecrop Farm is a diversified operation that sells to six area restaurants, two health food stores, has a flower CSA, and sells both flowers and vegetables at a weekly farmers market.
The ideal candidate is available for a long-term relationship, is optimistic and non-faltering even in all weather conditions and during a long day of work.
The farm provides on-site housing which includes a mini-kitchen, sleeping loft, open living space, and a porch. Bathroom facilities are rustic. They offer lunch Monday through Friday, vegetables galore for cooking on your own, and a weekly stipend of $100. The farm is a half-hour from town, so your own transportation is ideal. You can tour other area farms and homesteads and have after-hour educational sessions. They’re also close to the river, a university town, and they have hiking trails through the woods.
Please see their website at www.stonecropfarmers.com. If you’re interested, contact Gwynn and Bert at stonecropfarmers@gmail.com or call them at 540-599-0839. Application deadline is February 15th.
