Organic Farm Education Internship Program at Kahumana Organic Farms & Cafe in Waianae, Hawaii – 2019

Organic Farm Education Internship Program Description: Experiential education program in tropical vegetable and fruit production at Kahumana Organic Farms & Cafe on the island of Oahu.

Organic farm education internship participants learn production scale tropical agriculture through immersive education in farm operations including: pest and weed management, soil fertility management, vegetable production tasks such as planting/seeding/harvesting, orchard management, distribution through farmer’s markets and restaurants, caring for farm animals, organic certification, food hub, environmental education and more.

This intensive organic farm education internship differs from typical farm apprenticeship programs in the ability to offer scheduled and quality one-on-one instruction, as well as the opportunity to complete a capstone project. The project will be aligned with both the participants interests and the farms’ needs to demonstrates the knowledge gained throughout program.

Kahumana Organic Farms & Cafe is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that has served vulnerable people through programs for homeless families and adults with developmental disabilities around a productive, farm-based community since 1978. The farm grows a variety of organic vegetables such as baby salad greens, carrots, herbs, beets, turnips, radishes, leeks, fennel, chard, kale, eggplant, turmeric, kalo, breadfruit, bananas, papaya, mango, citrus, among others.  

Accommodations: Program participants receive a private bedroom in a shared house with other farmers. Food is provided 7 days a week in our cafe where farmers are provided three organic farm-fresh meals each day. The cafe is able to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions.

Public transportation is accessible for participants to visit nearby beaches, hikes and cities.

Program Cost: The total cost of the three month program is $3,300. This cost includes room & board as well as instruction.

Schedule: 30 hours per week, 4 days each week.

Participants are selected based on their level of interest and potential for future application of what they’ve learned. We also strive to select a diverse group of participants, and welcome all applicants.
