Mid-Atlantic Care Farming Summit

Join Future Harvest CASA and Red Wiggler Community Farm for the first ever Mid-Atlantic Care Farming Summit on October 16, 2018.

Care farming is the therapeutic use of farming practices for health, social, or educational purposes for vulnerable groups of people. This full-day summit will focus on care farming for the benefit of individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

Join us in sharing experiences, talking through challenges, and brainstorming ways to improve the field. This is a great opportunity for Farmers & Community Members of all backgrounds to learn more about our inclusive practices.

Red Wiggler Community Farm has identified a wide range of care farming organizations in the U.S. that work specifically with individuals with developmental disabilities. Until now, space for them to come together to learn from each other and advance the field does not exist. While each organization is different, each has similar struggles and would benefit from learning how other organizations deal with issues around vocational training, horticulture therapy, training staff, and building an inclusive community.

The Mid-Atlantic Care Farming Summit will serve as a much-needed opportunity to compare notes, develop relationships, and build a support network in order to serve our clients and communities.

Care farming is a farming practice that uses agricultural resources to provide social or educational care services for vulnerable groups of people. Widely practiced in Europe, it is becoming an innovative aspect of social entrepreneurship in both developed & developing nations. The practice promotes mental and physical health by giving individuals an opportunity to cultivate the land. As technology pushes urbanization in many communities, Care Farms provide a chance for individuals of all abilities to connect to the natural world and the source of their food. The farms create employment for vulnerable populations, nourishment for the community, and a place for individuals from diverse backgrounds to work together.
