Meat and Vegetable Farm Internship

Snouts and Sprouts Farm in Pottstown Pa 19465 is looking for a fall intern to help primarily in our organic vegetable garden between now and the end of the growing season.  We are an organic farm that pasture raises beef, pork, eggs, and vegetables, which we sell directly to consumers through our CSA. The internship would include learning about pasture raised meat and eggs along with organic gardening practices. While the primary labor would be in the vegetable garden the owner will make herself available for questions and demonstrations on how our pastured meat is produced. We are looking for an intern that is passionate about organic sustainable practices who also believes in feeding a local community directly. Interns will learn which fall vegetables can be planted at what times, they will learn how to plant and space different types of vegetables. We will be planting vegetable starts which we started in our greenhouse as well as sowing some seeds directly into the ground. Interns will learn about the use of row cover for both pest control and frost protection. The type of vegetables we will be planting includes, broccoli, kale, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, beets and carrots. Weekly there will be continuous harvesting to do and the vegetables will need to be divided and packaged for CSA members each week, Weed management and organic pest control methods will be taught and demonstrated. We also use companion planting for pest control and mutually beneficial relationships between the plants so interns will have the chance to learn what can and cannot be planted together.  

Experience is not required but enthusiasm and passion is.  An intern would be required to work a minimum of one 4 hour shift per week, up to 40 hours a week are available if full time internship is desired. The more time you are able to commit to the farm the more you will learn. Physical abilities will be taken into account and respected, interns will never be asked to do a job that exceeds their comfort or physical ability
