There is a “sap house” barn with tools and storage but no living quarters. There is electric, well and septic at the sap house, and am starting t finish a 600 square foot addition that will be insulated and have a wood stove kitchen, bathroom, office and temporary sleeping quarters for the busy season. This farm has been collecting maple sap for over 80 years! We bought the land from the original farm family that settled in the 1850s when Wisconsin first opened to land sales. The original log cabin buildings still on top of hill from days of horse and wagon hauling of sap to a “sugar shack” building operation.
Methods change and now its vacuum pump system bringing sap through a network of tubing hung in the woods permanently, down to a central collection tank (stainless steel 2000 gallon) at the sap house location by the road. We not currently cooking sap, having that done nearby at Kickapoo Gold, he runs a large milk truck to collect daily during peak flow. We get syrup back in drums and then have bottled at the Maple Valley distribution center in nearby Cashton WI. They are a large maple cooperative with most members organic certified. Elk Run Maple Farm is certified through MOSA, and this is second year of our operations collecting sap and selling syrup. The woods are steep, candidate must be able to work steep woods, sometimes requires using fixed ropes to assist a climb up the hill.
