Livestock Farm Hand Job description:

Caney Fork Farms is seeking a full-time farm hand for the care of cattle, sheep, and hog operations on a 400-acre organic and regenerative farm in Carthage, Tennessee. The farm hand will assist in fencing, watering, feeding, monitoring animal health, moving portable housing, transporting to slaughter, construction, and all odd jobs.

Livestock Farm Hand Skills and Responsibilities Include:

  • Keen observation, care, and concern for animals
  • Work independently while managing time effectively
  • Tractor work and some mechanical skills
  • Moving animals with portable electric fencing almost daily
  • Silvopasture maintenance
  • Ability to work full days in all weather conditions and lift 50lbs
  • Periodic assistance with other aspects of the farm (veggie production, compost, trees, farm maintenance, etc.)

The Ideal Candidate:

We are willing to train the right person. Above all else, we seek an individual who has a passionate aspiration to work outside with animals in a way that regenerates the land, will learn and collaborate with cohorts and cultivate cohesive relationships among all farm humans and animals. An independent thinker and worker that can manage time effectively and efficiently is valued. The farm hand must love animals and have some experience in their care. A dedicated, hard-working, positive, down-to-earth, fun-loving candidate will be favored.

Housing:

Employee housing is offered on a 30-acre plot of land within a 10-minute drive of the farm. This “farm-ily” likes starry nights around bonfires, closing chicken coops, and pot-luck style dinners.

Compensation:

Hourly wage, based on experience.

The Farm:

Caney Fork Farms is an ecologically regenerative, socially integrated and financially profitable model of sustainable agriculture for the southeastern United States in the face of climate change. We raise Angus cattle, Katahdin sheep, and three heritage pig breeds on pasture in a way that improves our land base and, in turn, increases the biodiversity and ecological health of the soil, water, and air. Caney Fork Farms strives to employ best practices of animal welfare and sustainability. All animals are grown for meat and are processed throughout the year to sell to local consumers. The farm produces high-quality food while focusing primarily on perennial plants/tree crops and grass-based livestock. The farm also actively strives for a meaningful connection with an engaged local consumer community.
