Job: Garden Project Manager Wanted to Oversee Urban Agriculture Project for Rochester Roots (New York)

Start date: February 1, 2010 Position: Full time Wages: $13.55 per hour/40 hours per week Compensation: Paid vacation and holidays. Health insurance allowance. Rochester Roots is a non-profit organization committed to the creation of urban school and community gardening based educational programs for youth and adults. These programs are based on the principals of providing equal access to high quality, safe, affordable, healthy food grown through earth friendly practices. The Garden Project Manager is responsible for the planning, planting, maintaining, harvesting, and marketing of produce from several inner city school-community gardens and a greenhouse. The GPM coordinates and facilitates weekly hands-on garden-based workshops to 400 elementary school students in Pre-K through 6th grade and facilitates a 6-week summer intern program. The GPM is assisted by community volunteers. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, responsible, and have experience in organic farming practices, using a BCS tiller and farm tools. A valid drivers license is required to operate a Rochester Roots farm truck.

Good communication skills and the ability and interest in working with children and adults from diverse backgrounds and abilities are essential. Basic computer and good organizational skills are a must.

Job Description:

¨      Plan the farm calendar, planting schedule and crop rotation schedule

¨      Prepare each garden site for planting

¨      Develop and maintain gardens at inner-city schools – currently 1-1/2 acres

¨      Select seed, plant, and cultivate for market a variety of heirloom vegetables and herbs following recognized organic growing practices

¨      Maintain and oversee greenhouse production

¨      Oversee the harvesting, sale and distribution of garden produce

¨      Coordinate and facilitate produce and product sales at a seasonal Farmer’s Market

¨      Maintain all farming related equipment, tools, and supplies, including a farm truck

¨      Work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and volunteers in all aspects of garden and greenhouse production

¨      Work with students, staff and volunteers to ensure that each site is effectively utilized and maintained throughout the year

¨      Recruit, organize, train and supervise garden and greenhouse volunteers and students

¨      Keep accurate records of all matters relating to the operation of the greenhouse and gardens

¨      Conduct and/or coordinate weekly in-school agricultural workshops and educational programs during the school year

¨      Coordinate with City, school, and agency employees, and volunteers to identify sites, make improvements and establish productive gardens

¨      Assist in the research and writing of grants

¨      Assist in the planning and implementation of special events, public activities, and fundraising

¨      Assist in the development and production of value-added products

¨      Performs duties within state and local parameters and abides by school guidelines whenever applicable

¨      Assist other staff with various projects and work related errands as needed

¨      Submits written bi-monthly report to the Director, and

¨      Reports to the Director
