Assistant Farm Manager and Herdsman Job at Mt. Rush Farm in Buckingham County, Virginia – 2020

Mt. Rush Farm is a 140-cow Angus seed-stock operation located in Buckingham County, Virginia. The farm utilizes synchronized AI breeding, rotational grazing, fescue stockpiling, 180-acres of hay, and 10-20 acres of corn silage. Most breeding stock is sold private-treaty at the farm. Our goal is to provide high quality Angus bulls and replacement heifers to a regional customer base through continuous herd improvement, performance testing, and customer service.

The Herdsman and Assistant Manager works in association with the owner to manage a 500-acre Angus seed-stock operation. The position will require coordinated management and operation activities to include purebred cow-calf production, feed crop production, cattle marketing, facility and equipment maintenance, supervising farm employees and other related activities. Minimum requirements for this position include:

  • High School diploma.
  • Minimum 2-year technical degree in production agriculture. Alternatively, 2-years of farm experience or other related technical experience. (hard for someone coming out of military –demonstrated  farm extensive experience in cattle management and cattle production)
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Two references from relevant work experience.

Provisions for the Herdsman Job Include:

  • Compensation of $15.00 – $20.00 per hour based on experience
  • Based on 40 hours normal per week. Minimum 30-hours per week.
  • Some weekend work required. (Seasonal)
  • On call availability required for farm emergencies for scheduled portion of each week.
  • Two weeks paid vacation per year – scheduled around major farm activities.
  • Liability insurance coverage under farm policy.
  • Up to three days per year allocated for farm related training and educational events.
  • Hunting privileges on the farm.
  • Year-end bonus pay based on individual and farm performance.
