Heartbeat Learning Gardens Farmer Training Program – OH
Apply Now for Heartbeat Learning Gardens Farmer Training Program in Ohio – 2018
Spend the summer living, working, and studying on a small farm in southwest Ohio!
Gain the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to manage your own organic farm by applying for a spot in Heartbeat’s 3-6 month farmer training program. Over the course of the training, students learn about different farming philosophies, the science behind plant growth, how to grow high quality vegetables, and how to manage a farm business.
On-the-farm training takes place within the context of our vegetable CSA and is supplemented with group readings, discussions, and field trips to other farms – about 40 hours per week all together. Students work and learn with our director and farm manager. As the season continues, students have the chance to test themselves by taking on more leadership responsibilities on the farm. Those who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to apply for the farm manager position the following year.
Heartbeat provides room and board, as well as scholarships for those with additional living expenses. We have group lunches during the week. The nearest town is 3 ½ miles from the farm and accessible by bike path for those who don’t have a car.
Prior experience is not required to apply and selection is based on an applicant’s availability, interest, reliability, and ability to get along with others. The application process consists of an online intake form and a follow-up interview in person or by phone. The program begins in mid-April and ends in mid-October, but can be abbreviated for those with limited availability.
Heartbeat Learning Gardens is an educational non-profit that teaches simple living, cooperative culture, and sustainable agriculture on a 4 acre farm outside Yellow Springs, Ohio. In addition to vegetables, we grow fruit and nut trees and raise chickens and honeybees. We also offer workshops, host field trips, and provide food for a soup kitchen.
