Grassfed Beef Herd Manager Job on Maryland Organic Farm
Grassfed Beef Herd Manager Job on 35 Year Old Organic Farm in Maryland
What They Do at Nick’s Organic Farm:
They farm 165 certified organic acres on the Baltimore-Washington DC urban fringe—in Frederick County, Maryland. Using modern farm equipment, they raise rotationally grazed grassfed angus beef, pastured chickens and turkeys, and free range eggs. They grow and sell various types of hay and baleage, and they maintain different types of pastures. They produce field corn, popcorn, and Indian corn, field and food grade soybeans, barley and various non-GMO organic seeds, such corn and soy. While they started as a produce operation, they are not currently in vegetable production.
Some interesting things that they do include research projects in conjunction with USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and our 12 year crop rotation for their cattle, hay, pasture and row crops. They use both summer and winter cover crops and plant multiple species together whenever possible.
As a small farm, they must add value to their products by selling most of them directly to the end user whether that is a family or another organic farm. They process their own poultry and produce organic seed for small seed companies and for other organic farms. They grind their grains into organic poultry feed to sell to other farms and backyard flocks. They also grind and sell food grade corn meals.
