Garden Manager Job, Assistant, Apprentices and Interns – Virginia
Waverly Farms, LC seeks an experienced garden manager for the 2016 season. Located near Richmond, VA on 235 acres of sustainable land, they are an integrated farm that grows vegetables without the use of artificial pesticides, herbicides, or other potentially harmful chemicals and raises freely ranging animals using Certified Organic feed. They are currently in their ninth year of operation.
Garden Manager Job: The garden manager will be the primary person responsible for the oversight of Waverly Farms’ vegetable production, including the successful operation of the summer and fall CSAs and a stand at a seasonal farmer’s market. There are currently three acres under cultivation for vegetable production. This past year featured the largest CSA enrollment yet with 80 summer and 40 fall members. The garden manager will work 45-55 hours over a five-day workweek and will have multiple staff members and volunteers available to assist with farm work. The manager will report directly to the farm owners and will be consulted on matters related to long-term plans for the farm.
Responsibilities include:
Developing business and crop plans, mapping the use of garden space before the season begins, and maintaining records throughout the season
Management of farm employees and volunteers
Recruiting CSA members including outreach to potential new subscribers
Maintaining customer relations
Ordering seeds, seeding, soil preparation, and transplanting
Ongoing maintenance of the garden including irrigation, weeding, and pest control
Harvesting and packing vegetables
Delivering CSA shares and participating in a weekly farmer’s market
Individuals of all backgrounds, both personal and professional, are encouraged to apply. However, the ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
At least two years’ experience with farm work
An educational background in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, or agricultural science, or relevant experience in the above fields
A strong sense of professionalism, integrity, and reliability
Ability to multitask, manage others, and communicate clearly
Flexibility, friendliness, and receptiveness to constructive criticism and ideas
Ability to work and make decisions independently
Ability to repeatedly lift 50 lbs
Willingness to work in all weather conditions
Valid driver’s license and vehicle

Apprentices and interns have the opportunity to gain experience in both vegetable and livestock production. There are currently three acres under cultivation for vegetable production with 80 members during the peak of CSA season as well as over 200 animals including cattle, hogs, goats, sheep, chickens, horses, and llamas. Employees work 40-50 hours over a five-day workweek and have the opportunity for promotion to more advanced roles on the farm over time.
