Matthews Winery is Hiring a Full-Time Farm Manager – 2019

At Matthews Winery, we grow diversified vegetables, fruits, and flowers on our 8+ acre organic farm in Woodinville, WA. We are driven by market gardening principles, utilizing human-scaled tactics and keeping a light footprint, as we produce a large quantity of quality produce and flowers on small acreage, using ecologically sound practices.

Our property includes 3+ acres of fertile growing area, along with an additional 5+ acres that includes forest terrain, woods, a spring-fed creek, a farm house, and our winery tasting room.

Our Full-Time Farm Manager will help lead the development + care of all aspects of our farming operation. This includes bed prep, planting, cultivation, irrigation, managing field crew, and assuring that harvest occurs on schedule and to a high standard.

As the Farm Manager, your responsibility is to develop a system to deliver high quality food + flowers for:

  • Monthly CSA boxes (80-100)
  • Farm-to-Table dinners
  • Restaurants where our wines are served
  • Events for our Wine Club members
  • Food banks

Full-Time Farm Manager Responsibilities + Preferred Skills

Maintaining day-to-day farming operations, including but not limited to:

  • Seasonal planning
  • Growing + harvest of all vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.
  • Growing + harvest of all flowers (perennials, heirloom, etc.)
  • Care for chickens and chicken coop.

Skills/Competencies Preferred:

  • 3+ years farming experience in the PNW
  • Experience and knowledge of: greenhouse operations, bed prep, transplanting, direct seeding, cultivating, harvesting, irrigation, post-harvest handling.

Other preferred traits:

  • Positive attitude and enthusiasm for sustainable food production
  • Interest in human-scaled agriculture
  • Market Gardening experience
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work long hours in all types of weather conditions
  • Interest in representing the values of the company while interacting with anyone on site, during events, or delivering produce in the market.
  • Familiarity with the Pacific NW climate and unique growing challenges
  • Clean driving record, valid driver’s license and ability to drive large passenger van/box truck
  • Knowledge of how to safely use small and large machinery
  • Experience with general carpentry
  • Adaptability – ability to be flexible when changes occur

The Full-Time Farm Manager must be willing and able to work long and irregular hours during peak season as the needs of the farm dictate the work to be done. Applicants must be available on weekends when necessary, and should not plan extended vacation time during the primary growing season (April 15 – October 15).

Plans for a hoop-house, and eventual greenhouse, are slated for the end of 2019 and beginning of 2020. These will be developed under the guidance of the Farm Manager.

Salary will depend on experience, and the position includes all full-time staff benefits (medical). Farm Manager is eligible for yearly promotion. Additional perks include staff wine discount, food from the farm, and invitation to all Matthews related events.
