Full Sun Farm in Leicester, North Carolina, Seeks Interns for the 2020 Season
Full Sun Farm is a small diversified vegetable farm located in Leicester NC west Asheville NC run by Alex Brown and Vanessa Campbell. The 2020 season will be our 21st growing vegetables, cut flowers and berries. Our produce is marketed through two weekly Farmers markets, a small local CSA and a some wholesale. Since our inception we have practiced organic methods such as but not limited too crop rotation, cover cropping and compost application. Recently we have begun to incorporate the notions of regenerative agriculture and are certified “Naturally Grown”.
Three interns positions are currently open for this season starting 3/15/2020 and ending 10/31/2020. We offer housing in a nice small house that is equipped with a bathroom, electricity and running hot water. Interns receive a stipend starting at $600/mo with monthly raises, have access to produce from the farm, get one week paid vacation and will also receive a bonus at the end of year that is based on performance and skill mastery. Many interns have graced our fields and home and we are always looking forward to meeting the next group of people with whom we will share the season. Full Sun Farm Internship Details
Being an intern at Full Sun Farm is an immersive experience. Living and working on the farm allows you to see it in all weathers, lights and moods. During the course of the season you will be involved in many aspects of running the farm. This includes greenhouse work, planting, cultivating and harvesting of vegetables and cut flowers, insect and disease management, irrigation, season extension and helping run a farmer’s market stand. Interns generally work together, along side/under the supervision of our crew leader Sam or us. You will also live with the other apprentices, sharing a common room/ kitchen and a bathroom!
Growing vegetables and flowers is a physical endeavor that requires paced work and the use of ones body on a daily basis. We work hard and strive to do so in an efficient manner that allows for the continuous and successful completion of tasks. In that vain we are looking for people who are enthusiastic, like to work outside in the elements and are interested in learning about farming. Good communication and attention to detail are also fundamental aspects of the work environment at Full Sun.
Educational Opportunities:
The main source of education will be the hands on experience of working in the field every day. On top of that we have weekly field walks to observe and discuss specific field and crop conditions, projects for the day and week, and the general big picture of farm and an extensive on-farm library. Farm visits, to other local growers can be arranged and all crew members will be CRAFT members for the duration of there time at Full Sun. Other Tidbits:
We eat lunch together four days a week with cooking responsibilities rotating through everybody. A weekly yoga class is offered on the farm. We are located 45 minutes outside of downtown Asheville you will need a car for transportation. You will work Monday-Fri 40-50hrs a week with Sundays and most Saturdays off. Interns work Saturday market along side Vanessa or Sam on a rotating schedule. If you are working the Saturday market you get the previous Wednesday afternoon off.
