FSOP Grantees Provide Special Trainings on Food Safety Compliance
The Food Safety Outreach Program (FSOP) helps farmers and business owners comply with new requirements under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) by supporting food safety training, education, and technical assistance across the country. Last week, the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced FSOP awards for fiscal year (FY) 2018.
Congress provided an additional 40 percent increase in funding in FY 2018. NSAC advocates for food safety training to remain a congressional priority, and supports the Senate’s passed agriculture appropriations bill of increase of $8 million in funding levels for FSOP in FY 2019.

Insights into Deregulatory Actions at FDA, USDA, and EPA
The Trump Administration recently released a snapshot of upcoming regulatory changes: the “Fall 2018 Unified Agendas of Regulatory and Deregulatory Actions.” Among these, the Unified Agendas of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) include major regulatory undertakings that will significantly impact the sustainable agriculture community in the coming year.
Depending on the timing, the planned regulatory changes in the Unified Agenda could also substantially affect or be affected by the outcome of the next farm bill. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) has analyzed the implications of these actions, and will carefully monitor their movement in the coming weeks and months and be on the lookout for opportunities to act during comment periods and for further analysis.
