Farming Opportunity in Northern California
Farming Opportunity at Live Power Community Farm in Northern California – 2021
Farming opportunity for vegetable grower(s) to share in operation of established, horse powered, diversified biodynamic 50 ac. farm organism. Live Power Community Farm includes a 100 household CSA, livestock, beginning farmer education, and farm visit program for school children in the spring and fall.
We are looking for a vegetable farmer to help operate and manage the 2-4 acre CSA garden who has at least two years of commercial gardening experience. The founding farmers, Gloria and Stephen Decater, will remain active in the farm and mentor the succession farmers. A commitment to farming as a livelihood is essential. The ability and desire to live in community, and operate collaboratively within the farm, is also necessary.
The work on the farm includes using biodynamic, live power (PV electric, work animal tillage, on farm generated fertility), and associative economic community based practices, rather than market based business/economic practices. Whoever fills this position will be sharing the responsibilities of the farm with Stephen and Gloria.
We have operated this farm for over 40 years using horse, hand, and solar electric power to provide vegetables and meat for CSA member families. Farm livestock includes beef and dairy cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry. The workhorses cultivate the garden, and are used for growing hay, permanent pasture managed with intensive grazing, and occasional grain.
The farm will initially provide room and board, and compensation will be based on ability and term of commitment. Eventual net profit sharing is possible. On the property there are two studios/small houses beside the Decater’s residence for housing. For the right person(s), this position offers the opportunity for increasing responsibility and long term involvement.
