Farmhand Jobs in Illinois at Sola Gratia Farm
Full and part-time Farmhand Jobs in Illinois (FT preferred) at Sola Gratia Farm – 2021
Start date for Farmhand Jobs in Illinois: could be mid-April, May or early June
Location: Urbana, Illinois
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
We seek full-time and part-time Farmhands for our 12-acre not-for-profit community vegetable farm. Farm hands will participate in all aspects of production. This includes greenhouse seeding, field planting, hand and mechanical weeding, harvesting, field maintenance, wash/pack, and distribution to the community. Experience in working on a CSA farm or vegetable farm that follows organic practices in the Midwest is valued but not necessary. What’s more important is that you are honest, communicative, and have a good attitude and strong work-ethic. You will be a representative of Sola Gratia Farm, so maintaining a positive and professional demeanor even in difficult situations is essential. You must be able to take direction, pay attention to detail, and work with a sense of urgency when the pressure is on. It is also important to be in good physical condition; you must be able to lift 40lbs repeatedly and be prepared to work outside for hours at a time, sometimes in extreme conditions, doing physically demanding work.
This is not an internship, as we do not have a set educational component. That said, we will make every effort to thoroughly answer any production-related questions and share any educational resources that we have access to. Even though this is not an internship, there is still great potential for learning about local food production. As with any educational opportunity, you get out what you put in.
Hourly wage:
The starting wage is $11 per hour, with 20-40 hours a week available. The right candidate may be able to get more hours and increase their wage if they show that they can get results and have the desire to take on more responsibility. Along with financial compensation, and learning opportunities, farm hands can earn access to produce from the farm. These are the freshest, highest quality veggies around!
SOLA GRATIA FARM:
Sola Gratia Farm is unique in many ways. We are a community mission-based farm started by St. Matthew Lutheran Church, dedicated to producing locally-grown, high-quality produce following organic practices. The farm is committed to helping those who lack adequate food resources by donating at least ten percent of our product to support regional hunger programs, such as Eastern Illinois Foodbank and Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. We grow a wide range of produce to support our 150 member Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, two farmers markets and several retail and wholesale clients. We operate a robust volunteer program and have many established and active community partnerships. The Farm promotes healthy lifestyles and community building through volunteering and service, special events and outreach and education programs. More information at www.solagratiacsa.com
