Farm Position in Ohio – Horses and Donkeys
Turner Farm, a non-profit farm with an educational mission in Cincinnati, Ohio, is offering an apprentice/teamsters assistant position caring for and working with 4 Belgian horses and 2 donkeys. Turner Farm uses horses for some of their farm work as well as wagon rides for summer camps & visitors. Additionally, the horses attend parades and other public events such as the farmers market. The donkeys are used for protection of sheep, with the hopes to train one to use in the gardens.
Turner Farm is currently seeking an apprentice/teamster’s assistant for the 2014 growing season (April-October) with the possibility of being hired for year-round management of the draft animal program in future years. The ideal candidate has experience working & caring for draft horses, maintaining horse drawn equipment, and a genuine enthusiasm for teaching others in order to keep the art of farming with horses alive. Experience raising produce and training young equines would be a plus. Turner Farm is located in the suburbs of Cincinnati, and we have a lot of visitors as we are open to the public, Monday-Saturday, year round.
Compensation will be an hourly rate, DOE. There may be an option to live in a house with garden interns for minimal rent, in which case transportation may not be needed because you can share rides and/or bike (about 20 minutes) to the farm. Work hours are typically M-F, 8-5, however sometimes longer hours and weekends are required. You should expect to work a couple weekends per month on average.
