Farm Opportunity in Michigan
Farm opportunity in Michigan at Hygieia Homestead – 2018
Owners of Hygieia Homestead would like to hire a worker/apprentice to train for future partner/co-owner of 55-acre veganic and certified organic vegetable farm (no animals) in rural mid Michigan near Sterling. Seeking person/s who want to grow healthy food sustainably, are enthusiastic, hard-working and looking for long-term commitment.
We grow garlic, potatoes, heirloom dry beans, mixed vegetables in season such as tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplant, sweet corn, onions, peppers, and squash and a variety of fruits and berries like strawberries and melons. The market includes seed companies, coops and health food stores, restaurants and our own farm stand nearby. We grow veganically and are interested in finding people who understand about the value of that type of agriculture. We also eat a vegan diet so it would be helpful if this person shared that view as well.
Built as a sustainable homestead, our home is earth sheltered with passive solar heating and wood stove (also naturally cool in summer). We have a 30×30 root cellar and indoor well that has electric and hand pump. There are three orchards: a nut orchard, a stone fruit orchard, and one that contains paw paws, persimmons, pears and apples.
The farm opportunity in Michigan is not far from the Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron and there is a good canoeing river nearby. Classes are held at the farm on a variety of health and farm-related subjects.
No experience is necessary just an eagerness to live the good life! Mark, a truck mechanic, and Janet a nurse and writer are willing to teach farm management, marketing, seed-saving, food preservation, machinery mechanics and much more. Room and board and extensive library included. Visit our farm page on facebook: hygieiahomestead or Janet’s website: drjanetallen.com.
