Farm Manager Internship Position Description
- Farm Manager- couples are encouraged to apply
- Single person: 40hrs per week @ $12/hr
- Couple: 30hrs each per week @ $12/hr
- Room and board can be discussed/as needed
- Staff employee, responsible for his or her own benefits
- Must commit to June 2019 to November 2019- discussion after the term to become the farm manager
- Attends monthly Board of Directors meetings
Qualifications
The Farm Manager Internship applicant should have the following qualifications and experience:
- Farming experience
- Management experience
- Familiarity with all aspects of running a small-scale vegetable farm, including but not limited to:
- Tractor use and maintenance, crop planning, crop rotation, integrated Pest management, disease management, record keeping, greenhouse management, food safety/post-harvest handling, soil and nutrient management, soil testing and cover cropping
- Basic knowledge of orchards
- Pruning, harvesting, maintenance ad up keep
- Basic knowledge of conservation practices
- Soil, habitat, water
- Knowledgeable and committed to upholding organic and regenerative principles and requirements
- Proficiency in Word and Excel for record keeping and reporting purposes
- Maintain filing system for all records
- Keep calendar and schedule of farming activities
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Experience with sales, farm manager will be responsible for farmers markets and restaurant sales
- Experience working with volunteers
- Basic problem-solving skills, adaptability and positivity are a must
Farm Manager Internship Responsibilities
Shadow current Farm Managers in the day-to-day operations and planning of the vegetable farm, including but not limited to, planning and implementing crop plan and succession planting for 4 season growing (start plants in the greenhouse in a timely manner for transplanting), work with The Urban Edge Farm Board of Directors and First Generation Farmers Board of Directors to determine type & varieties of vegetables to produce, source seed varieties that are high performers and organic, prepare the fields and beds for vegetable plantings, determine type, timing, and application of soil and plant amendments to maximize production, determine irrigation usage and maintain the irrigation system, create harvest lists and implement the harvest and post-harvest activities (we take pride in producing excellent quality produce), maintenance and upkeep of farm equipment and spaces used in vegetable production, coordination of water needs and irrigation set up, record keeping including; daily operations, inputs, seeding, planting, harvest/market, irrigation, etc.
Farm Manger Intern is expected to:
Learn from the current Farm Managers as they have been running the organic farm for over 5 years and have extensive knowledge. At the end of the internship (November 2019) we will discuss the promotion to the Farm Manager position.
