Farm Internship in New Mexico

New Mexico FarmMay Family Farm is located in northern New Mexico, 1 hour north of Santa Fe and 1 & 1/2 hours south of the Colorado line.  They are in Abiquiu, NM, a beautiful and historic farming valley on the Chama River.  The farm is surrounded by national forest, lakes and rivers; recreational opportunities abound.  The farm is located on 20 acres with about 4 in mixed vegetable production.  It is 100% chemical free and they strive to use the most sustainable methods to produce their crops.  Produce is sold at the Taos Farmers Market as well as through a CSA (community shared agriculture).  In recent years, they have started a program donating produce from the farm to food banks and other underserved populations. A 2015 intern would be expected to work 40 hours a week in the field and in marketing; i.e. selling at Farmers Market & making deliveries.  Someone with experience working in the field would be preferred. However, the most important qualification is a desire to learn about growing food and a strong work ethic.  They would prefer a couple or family who is willing to commit to at least two months.  A 6 month commitment would be ideal. The interns will stay in an RV situated in a shady cottonwood grove just above the flowing acequia.  The RV has kitchen, bathroom, shower and bedroom.  The interns will be paid 50 dollars a week plus fresh veggies from the field and eggs from our chickens.

The internship is considered an educational opportunity and not a source of slave labor.  They are passionate about sharing their knowledge about sustainable food production, especially in high altitude, semi-arid environments.  Learning opportunities include all aspects of produce production.  These include irrigation, tractor and tiller operation, marketing and selling of produce, as well as all of the horticultural aspects of vegetable production.
