Farm Interns and Apprentices Wanted in Delaware

Farm Interns and Apprentices wanted in Delaware: The Kranz Hill Farm CSA is seeking 1 full-season APPRENTICE and 3 spring and summer INTERNS for 2016.

The Kranz Hill Farm, a 100-member vegetable CSA, will begin its 6^th season on the outskirts of Newark, Delaware. Our farm practices organic farming with the use of a small tractor. We also have a couple flocks of chickens and a small herd of goats and donkeys on site, whose keeping can be included as part of an apprenticeship or internship.

Through daily involvement in the running of the farm, close and consistent engagement with the farmer, and personal responsibility for the success of certain tasks or crops, an APPRENTICE is expected to mature in his competence and understanding of small-scale sustainable vegetable farming. The apprenticeship runs from March through November. Apprentices are expected to work 40 to 50 hours each week. Due to the small size of the farm, an apprentice must be happy to work alone for hours at a time, and remain diligent and competent without supervision. At least one season of commercial farming experience is preferred but not required. Free housing near the University of Delaware and a moderate stipend are available.

An INTERN is expected to work 12 to 25 hours a week, be eager to learn, and enjoy for the subtropical weather of a Delaware summer. No previous experience is expected, though we welcome experienced gardeners and farmers who would like to learn more about small-scale sustainable farming. Internships can be tailored to the interests, experience, and availability of the individual concerned: last year we offered an internship in the mechanical aspects of the farm, two general internships, and an internship in the care and keeping of chickens, donkeys, and goats. A small stipend is available.
