Onsite farm hand job on a self sufficient farm in Berthoud, Colorado

Simply Natural Dairy is a small self sufficient family farm on 20 acres along the Little Thompson River. Their goal is to become self sufficient and sell excess farm products within the local community. The farm was doing well and they hosted some public events to help with additional funding for the farm, but that changed when the farm was devastated by the 2013 flood. They are working hard to rebuild and they are looking for someone who is interested in being a part of the self sufficient lifestyle to help with the milking and the animal care so they can focus on rebuilding.

The farm currently has grass fed Jersey beef, pork and sheep. They also have a raw milk herd share program. They are building a flock of farm fresh chickens and are hoping to add turkeys next year. They are building a greenhouse with plans to start a vegetable CSA next year. They are also building a fodder system to grow fresh livestock feed year round. A fruit and nut orchard, bee keeping and an aquaponic system are also in the future plans.

The ranch hand position would require a minimum of 20 hours a week, specifically Sat, Sun, Mon. The main duties would include to machine milk 2-5 Mini Jersey cows, feed and care for the various farm animals, fodder production, basic fence/pasture maintenance and basic animal record keeping, along with bottling and distributing the milk shares three days a week. Transportation is definitely preferred.  They prefer animal/farm experience, but are willing to train someone who is genuinely interested in the challenging, but rewarding farm lifestyle. They are looking for someone who wants to because part of their farm community and wants to work toward a self sufficient, natural way of life.

This position offers a private room in the main home with a semi private bath in compensation. On site camper living or tiny home space could be considered instead of a room in the house. This position would also include training in greenhouse management and fodder production. Board is not included, but this position does include access to excess raw milk and milk products from the milk share program. As well as access to excess produce from the upcoming CSA program the farm will be starting next year.

The farm’s educational opportunities are open ended because they are rebuilding basically from scratch and adding new products as they build. This is a great time to get involved on the ground floor.
