Farm Apprenticeship in Washington State for 2015
Persephone Farm Apprenticeship 2015 in Indianola, Washington
Start: March 1st; Finish: mid November Applications will be reviewed until all four positions are filled. A season-long commitment is expected after a two week trial period. Applications accepted until all four positions are filled. Couples are encouraged to apply, though we cannot accept families. Car required. Our helpers work closely with the two women farmer/owners who model a strong work ethic and emphasize lots of teaching in the fields. Many of our former apprentices are now successful farmers, building on our creative model of niche marketing and the authenticity of our growing practices. They’ve offered our program for well over a decade and have developed a well-rounded, respected, and, in many cases life-changing opportunity for those who come to work alongside us. They particularly encourage beginners interested in starting their own sustainable, diversified small farms to apply. Learn about running a CSA, cut flower production and floral design, farmer's market and restaurant sales, orchard, poultry, composting, marketing and lots more. They offer approximately $650/month including profit sharing plus bonuses in exchange for full time work. Housing is provided as is food from the farm, including the freshest veggies imaginable, free range eggs and some chicken. Persephone Farm is in an idyllic setting within walking distance of a sandy swimming beach, a welcoming intentional community, miles of wooded trails, and abundant wildlife. Enjoy a lovely small town atmosphere in cool, lush Western WA, an hour, including ferry ride, from Seattle.
Agricultural experience is not required. More important are: a positive attitude, willingness to work and try hard, good verbal communication skills, a desire to work cooperatively and efficiently, good physical health, flexibility, and a love of healthy cooking and eating.
They offer lots of hands-on instruction and responsibility in all aspects of the farm’s operation. Optional readings, field trips, research, and directed self-study projects are available as desired. They aim to offer a high quality educational experience while immersing you in the full range of production goals undertaken on our diversified farm. In addition to our farm teachings, there are abundant opportunities to learn a wide range of skills from our broader community. These include bread and cheese making, wild crafting, hard cider making, herbal medicine, bee keeping, fiber arts, metal working and more.
Housing is provided in a cozy, wood-heated yurt on our beautiful, quiet 13 acre farm an hour, including ferry ride, from Seattle. Dwellings are electrified, furnished, and have (somewhat sketchy) wireless Internet access. There is a communal kitchen, shared bathroom and laundry.
Apprentices have the opportunity to tend their own small garden plot during their stay here. Coupl
No cigarette smokers.
Persephone Farm strongly believes that each year’s group of interns is our most important crop, as you take your season of learning with us out into the world to affect positive change.
