Farm Apprenticeship and Course Coordinator in CA
Farm Apprenticeship and Course Coordinator Position at UC Santa Cruz – 2021
The Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) at UC Santa Cruz is excited to announce that we are actively seeking a new Farm Apprenticeship and Course coordinator to help usher in our re-envisioned Apprenticeship Program and new Short Course series, with our offerings carefully designed to expand accessibility and relevance for a wide array of learners seeking to build skills and capacity as growers, land stewards and food system change makers.
The Apprenticeship Program, offered twice per year in a 10 week format, will serve aspiring growers and activists seeking to build baseline knowledge on soil health management, crop production and food system change. The Short Course topics, such as tractor cultivation systems, seedling production, fruit tree production, cut flower production and seed sovereignty, are designed to go deeper with audiences already possessing foundational knowledge of the subject matter.
The mission of CASFS is to advance agroecology and equitable food systems through experiential education, participatory research, agricultural extension, and public service. CASFS and the Apprenticeship staff have a deep commitment to growing the next generation of farmers and community leaders that will contribute to manifesting a just and equitable world through food. Joining the CASFS team, at this juncture, is a tremendous opportunity to shape the future direction of programming and to contribute directly to growing new farmers, gardeners, educators, and food system change activists.
The Farm Apprenticeship and Course coordinator will collaborate with farm and garden managers, instructors, other CASFS staff who support student success, are involved in delivering program content, experiential opportunity, program evaluation, and ongoing curriculum refinement. The Apprenticeship and Short Course coordinator will also also work closely with the community and residential life coordinator (this position will be posted soon) to create and continuously refine a robust curriculum and daily experience where all participants can thrive, grow their skills and capacity, are seen and heard, and will be well equipped to grow food, care for the land, improve the food system and to give back to their communities.
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual with a background in curriculum development and delivery, especially in the arenas of organic agriculture, agroecology, and food systems. A strong preference will be given for individuals whose past work involves building curriculum that centers equity and justice, and prioritizes meeting the needs of diverse learner communities. This is a full time, year round, career position that involves three principal sets of responsibilities: 1) curriculum development, course design, program evaluation, and course refinement, 2) coordination of course logistics, systems and budgets, and 3) outreach, recruitment, selection and retention of program participants.
Please share this posting widely with your networks and anyone you think would be well suited to take on this critical role at CASFS and the Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship and Short Course coordinator is a vital position at CASFS and we are excited to grow our team with this new hire. The initial review date for this position is September 28, 2021, and we will begin reviewing applications shortly thereafter.
