Draft Horse Workshop in New York
Groundswell’s 2015 Draft Animal Practicum: How Draft Horses & Mules Think Horse Training Methods for Beginning Teamsters
Presented by Groundswell Center for Local Food and Farming & Donn’s Teamster Training School
Saturday & Sunday, May 2-3, 2015, 9 AM – 3PM
Instructors: Donn Hewes, Krissy Boys Faust, Allie Taisey, Stasia Newell; Location: Northland Sheep Dairy, Marathon, NY (camping available)
There is a strong connection between understanding how a draft animal is originally trained to work and a beginning teamster’s understanding of their relationship with a working animal or team. We will demonstrate and let participants practice the basic skills of teaching young animals to be caught, lead, and stand. We will take young and older animals into a round pen where students can experience asking them to move with direction and purpose, as well as stand still. We will demonstrate and practice the steps involved in harnessing and driving a young animal for the first time.
This class is appropriate for anyone considering getting started with draft animals, as well as those with a few years of teamster experience. No prior horse experience is necessary.
“The draft horse workshop at Northland was INCREDIBLE. Literally one of the coolest things I’ve ever participated in EVER. Donn is a Master and is so generous with his time and knowledge. Groundswell is opening so many awesome doors…..” – Groundswell Trainee, 2011
