Draft Horse Powered Farm Job
Draft Horse Powered Farm Job at Featherbed Lane Farm in New York State – 2019
Featherbed Lane Farm (www.featherbedlanefarm.com), a draft horse powered and full year CSA located near Saratoga Springs, NY, is seeking to hire a Seasonal Farmer / Farm Assistant. This is a full-time position, salaried at $12/hour for a 40-hour work week, running from May until November. On-farm housing is not currently included.
Draft Horse Powered Farm Job: The Seasonal Farmer / Farm Assistant (Farm Assistant) works closely with the Farm Manager to carry out the day to day tasks of running the farm. The Farm Assistant’s primary tasks focus on vegetable production, including seeding and greenhouse management, transplanting, cultivation and pest control, harvest, washing and storage. Livestock work is a regular part of the Farm Assistant’s day-to-day work as well, including daily chores, fencing and watering. There are also regular but miscellaneous projects, such as building or equipment repairs, farm errands to purchase supplies and more. The Farm Assistant will also work closely with the CSA Manager to prepare for each week’s CSA Pickup. Prior farm experience, while valued, is less important than a good work ethic and attitude, the ability to do very physical work and to work outside during all weather conditions, and a readiness to learn, be effective, have fun and be a part of the farm team.
Draft Horse Powered Farm Job Responsibilities:
The following list includes the Farm Assistant’s primary responsibilities. It is not, however, a comprehensive list. Additional responsibilities may arise during the season.
Greenhouse Management – Soil blocking, seeding, monitoring germination, watering and otherwise maintaining the farm’s transplants and other greenhouse crops
Field Work – Transplanting and direct seeding, weeding, scouting and pest management and other vegetable field work
Product Management – Harvesting, washing and storage of vegetables and eggs
Livestock – Regular chores associated with the husbandry of draft horses and laying hens
CSA Pickup – Displaying, stocking and storing vegetables, and assisting with other aspects associated with the set-up and clean-up for each week’s CSA Pickup
