Diverse Farm Internships in Vermont
Diverse Farm Internships at Cate Hill Orchard in Vermont for the 2019 Season
Cate Hill Orchard is seeking to seasonal farm interns (ideally a couple or pair of close friends!) to: Milk sheep, mulch berries, pick apples, press cider, move fences, shovel manure, forage for wild medicinals, make bear fat salve, go to farmers markets, sing to the trees, sing to the sheep, weed the garden, extract honey, pick berries, wash dishes, weed berries, clean the milking parlor, feed lambs, take care of lambs, collect eggs, wash wool, and more. Average of 40 hours of work/week, with two consecutive days off (not Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays). Cate Hill Orchard’s diverse farm internships run from approx May 20 to Oct 31.
We are a small, diverse farm with a sheep dairy, organic apple orchard and small apiary, located in scenic Greensboro Vermont. We milk 45 ewes and make cheese and yogurt, grow four acres of organic apples and berries, and make healing salves from wild medicinal plants and animal fats. We sell our products at farmers markets, at our farm store, and do some wholesaling. We are singers and are always looking for farm workers who love to sing!
Due to the hard work of farming and modest pay, this is NOT the place to come if you’re just looking for a job to make some money. It IS the place to come for those with a genuine interest in small-scale agriculture in general; specifically organic apple orchard management, grass-based organic sheep dairy management, cheesemaking, and small-scale value-added production. Taking an internship is one of the best ways to receive a whole-farm education – we involve interns in all aspects of the farm.
Work experience is less important than a genuine interest in farming and the enterprises on our farm. We are looking for a sheep intern who loves sheep, wants to learn about sheep and dairying, and /or someone who is genuinely interested in organic apple growing and management. That said, any farm work experience is appreciated. Must be fine working outside rain or shine, hot or cold, bugs or no bugs, and be able to lift 40 lbs.
We start our diverse farm internships with a two-week trial/training period at $150/week, to make sure potential interns and our farm are a good match. After that, a weekly stipend of $200, possibly more depending on experience. (plus housing and farm grown food). Also the possibility of doing childcare for hourly wage ($12.50/hr)
Housing for diverse farm internships: You will live in a small camper with electricity, running water, woodstove, kitchen. Outside shower, with shared bathroom nearby. Wood heated sauna on farm.
Crew lunches provided most days, other meals on your own. Access to organic fresh vegetables, berries, fruits, cider, eggs, lamb, sheep cheese.
