Coronavirus Bill Contains Billions for Farmers and Farm Programs
On December 28th, President Trump signed the Emergency Coronavirus Relief Act of 2020, averting a looming government shutdown. This $2.3 Trillion dollar, 5,500 page, package of funding and legislation combined a $900 billion Coronavirus response bill and a $1.4 Trillion annual appropriations bill for FY21 into a single, must-pass “omnibus.”
This fourth coronavirus response bill (referred to as C4) contains a number of major improvements over the previous coronavirus package that lift up NSAC priorities and programs that could support more sustainable, equitable, and just food systems including billions for farmers and farm programs. Specifically, the bill contained nearly $26 Billion in support for agriculture to be split equally between Hunger and Nutrition and Farm and Food programs. Food Safety Outreach Program Grants Recently Awarded
At the end of 2020, the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded funds through the Food Safety Outreach Program (FSOP) to several organizations who plan to provide educational resources and assistance to farmers and food businesses working to improve their food safety practices.
FSOP provides grant funding to organizations that provide food safety training and assistance primarily to small and mid-sized farms, beginning and historically underserved farmers, small processors, and small produce wholesalers. New Funding Opportunity for Organic Transition and Education Research for 2021 and 2021
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced the Request for Applications (RFA) for the Organic Transitions Program (ORG) in late 2020. ORG supports research to improve the competitiveness of organic farming and focuses on projects that provide research and technical information to farmers who are either newly adopting organic practices or transitioning producers, enabling them to better understand the economic and environmental benefits of organic production.
Approximately $6.7 million is available for Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 and FY 2022, and the RFA will be developed every two fiscal years based on established priorities and approaches to solving critical agricultural issues. Applications Deadlines are as follows:
FY2021: March 15, 2021
FY2022: March 17, 2022
