Combating the Climate Crisis Through Conservation
Combating the Climate Crisis Through Conservation is the fourth blog in a series that focuses on the provisions of the Agriculture Resilience Act (ARA) introduced by Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) in February 2020. The ARA represents the first comprehensive piece of legislation introduced in the House of Representatives addressing climate change and agriculture. Read our previous blogs in the series here, here, and here.
Last week, the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis released its highly anticipated report, which included a chapter on agriculture that recognizes its critical role in our efforts to adapt to and mitigate climate change. Many of the provisions from the Agriculture Resilience Act (ARA) were included in the Select Committee’s report.
In this blog we dig into the soil health provisions in the ARA, emphasizing the proposed changes to the country’s primary working lands conservation programs: the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP). Read all about it here:
Release: FY 21 House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee Bill Finally Gives Farmers Hope
After months of delay, the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee marked-up its fiscal year (FY) 2021 Agriculture Appropriations bill to advance funding for food and agricultural programs. The House bill provides a total of $23.98 billion in discretionary funding, a modest increase of 2 percent ($487 million) above the FY 2020 enacted level. NSAC is generally pleased with funding levels, but there is still work to be done to support the Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SARE), the nation’s only farmer-driven research program. Check out more details on funding levels for FY 2021 on our blog:
Will $90 Million in Funding Hit the Mark for Sustainable Ag?
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) has announced its 2019 awardees of its $90 million flagship Sustainable Agriculture Systems (SAS) program. As part of the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative’s (AFRI) offering, SAS’s second installment of awards intends to support long-term ground-breaking research needed to transition our current agricultural sector into a more sustainable and resilient system. However, many of the projects awarded fail to focus on the main tenets of sustainable agriculture.
