CLIMATE CHANGE AND AGRICULTURE NEWS

Expiring CSP Contracts Now Eligible for Extension in 2019 – Farmers and ranchers received some good news this week when the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announced that producers with existing Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) contracts would be given the opportunity to renew their contracts in 2019. When the 2014 Farm Bill expired on September 30, 2018, NRCS lost its authority to extend or renew expiring CSP contracts – many of which expire at the end of this year.
AG Leaders Speak Out Against Pending Move of Federal Research Agencies – 21 former U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists, Undersecretaries, and Land-Grant University leaders submitted a letter to House and Senate Agriculture and Appropriations Committee leadership opposing the proposed relocation and reorganization of the nonpartisan Economic Research Service (ERS) and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) agencies. They summarize the proposed move as one that will “undermine our food and agriculture enterprise by disrupting and hampering the agencies’ vital work.”
The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is an alliance of grassroots organizations that advocates for federal policy reform to advance the sustainability of agriculture, food systems, natural resources, and rural communities.
