Berrey Hill Farm Apprenticeship in Virginia – 2017

We are looking for an apprentice to live and work on our 55-acre farm in Madison, Virginia. Our farm is set at the foothills of Shenandoah National Park, just fifteen minutes from downtown Madison, less than an hour north of Charlottesville, and an hour and a half from Washington, D.C. We are starting our farm in 2017, so it is a great opportunity for an apprentice who would eventually like to start a farm of his or her own. Our apprenticeship is a front-row seat to see how an operation is launched from day one!

Berrey Hill Farm is primarily a CSA (Community-Supported Agriculture) farm with wholesale and farmers market sales as well. Our first year we are targeting 40 CSA members, with plans to grow up to 100 members as we hone our skills growing vegetables, fruits, and both culinary and medicinal herbs to the organic standard. We’ll raise a flock of 100 laying hens our first season, rotating them via chicken trailer on pasture. The farm is managed by Katharine Wilson and owned by Holly Maillet, and both live on the land with their families.

Our apprentice will work 30 hours a week from March until October for a $175/week stipend with housing and worker’s compensation included. Position requirements include having some produce farming experience, being able to lift 50 pounds, having an upbeat, positive attitude and superb work ethic, caring deeply about sustainable agriculture and the health of our environment and ourselves, and owning a car for personal use.

We have a 19’ camper for the apprentice, with comfortable sleeping quarters, a complete kitchen, and bathroom with a compost toilet, shower and tub. The camper is in proximity to Katharine’s house, but neither dwelling is in sight of the other for privacy.
