Agritourism Internship in Michigan at Pond Hill Farm – 2019
General Description: Pond Hill Farm is a 197 acre farm in the beautiful resort community of Harbor Springs. We are a working farm in the agritourism business.
Areas of Focus:
- Vegetable Production
- Vineyard
- Brewery
- Canning Kitchen
Farming Highlights:
- Grow flowers, vegetables, herbs, wine grapes, and berries
- Roughly 20 acres of irrigated fenced vegetables
- 2 unheated greenhouses (rolling thunder, hoop house)
- 2 heated greenhouses
- Participate in 3 Farmer’s Markets during summer
- Raise pigs, lambs, and goats

- Farm Store – sells wine, beer, canned goods, fresh produce and Pond Hill merchandise
- The Garden Cafe -serves homemade farm grown lunches and our wine/beer

Minimum Length of Stay: 6 months
Meals: Interns prepare their own breakfast lunch and dinner. They are welcome to any produce they pick from the fields on their own time. Food staples are provided. There is a discount on food from the Farm Store as well as the Garden Cafe located onsite.
Skills Desired: Interns need to be prepared for a wide range of challenging experiences, and be ready to take on a significant degree of responsibility on a farm that grows more than just vegetables! Farming is physically and mentally demanding, but fun and rewarding too. Interns must have the following characteristics
- Desire to learn
- Creative
- Curious
- Attention to detail
- Can work independently
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- 21 years or older of age preferred
- Previous experience not required but preferred
Educational Opportunities:
You will have to opportunity to learn a variety of aspects of farming. Learning objectives will be provided for each area of the farm. Reading and viewing of videos may be suggested in some areas.
Stipend: $125/week – Bonus of $25 per week given upon satisfactory completion of internship. Shifts in our Tasting Room and/or working special events will allow for extra income.
Housing: On property housing options are provided as part of compensation. Private room, shared washer/dryer, kitchen and Wi-Fi.

Agritourism Internship Details: As an intern, you will be heavily involved in all operations of our farm. You will have the opportunity to work in many different areas of the farm but also will be assigned a focus. Your focus will be based on your goals/interests and our farm needs. These will be discussed in depth during the interview process.
Areas of focus:
- Vegetable production – production schedule/calendar, seeding, planting, cultivating, weed/insect control, pre/post harvesting techniques, selling/marketing at farmer’s market and more
- Vineyard – pruning, shoot tucking, weed control, trellising, harvesting and more
- Brewery – all aspects of a 3 barrel micro brewing system
- Canning Kitchen – production scheduling, standards for license canning kitchen, critical factors for recipes, acidified versus acid products, labeling, product development and more
