The Farm at St. Joe’s, located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, is a national leader in the growing field of hospital-based farming. Our mission is to grow a healthy community by empowering people through food, education, and relationships. As the Agriculture & Community Health Intern, you will have the opportunity to work at the intersection of health, agriculture, and sustainability in a truly unique environment. We should also mention that you’ll enjoy tons of fresh vegetables and many hours outside under the warm summer sun!
Program description:
We use sustainable agricultural practices to produce a diverse array of vegetables year-round in our three hoop houses and outdoor space. Vegetables are sold at our hospital farmers’ market, provided to patients at numerous clinics, served in the hospital cafeteria, and distributed through our St. Joe’s Farm Share program. The Farm Share is a collaborative “community supported agriculture” program, which sources fruits and vegetables from local farms and provides weekly bags of produce to over 150 participants. A section of the program targets families experiencing food insecurity, and weekly share distribution includes educational components related to food preparation and nutrition.
