Farm Internship in The Dominican Republic

Taino Farm Internships in Dominican Republic

Farm Internship in  The Dominican Republic at Taino Farm – 2021

Taino Farm is a permaculture inspired, agro-tourism demonstration and education center inspiring sustainable, nutritious food, hidden away on a tropical river outside the surf town of Cabarete, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

The Taino Organic Farm is cutting edge for the region, with modern aquaponics and water management systems, vermiculture, animal husbandry practices, as well as apiculture and aquaculture.

We produce a variety of vegetables and herbs and distribute them across the country. We also have a thriving tropical fruit forest for personal use. Our marketing is mostly done through social media, blogs, and in-person contact.

Taino Farm is looking for enthusiastic, creative, and self-driven people with a passion for agriculture and sustainability to take part in our Sustainable Living, Permaculture, and Aquaponics Farm Internship in the Dominican Republic.   We are currently accepting applications for our hands-on intensive submersion into managing fish, vegetable production, and other farm projects. For anyone who envisions starting their own farm or aquaponics project, or is just looking for an outdoor tropical get away this is a unique and invaluable opportunity!

Participants in our internship get an intensive real world practicum on how to run an eco-friendly farm and live sustainably. Topics include aquaponics system function and maintenance, worm-composting, product packaging and marketing, and cooking creative meals based on the daily harvest. We would be happy to work with schools to give students academic credit or provide a report outlining the learning outcomes and deliverables achieved during the internship. The goal is for Taino Farm to create a community of inspired people who are dedicated to creating solutions to make the world a more sustainable place.

Interns live and work in Los Brazos, Dominican Republic. Los Brazos is located 40 minutes from the surf town of Cabarete on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic. The North Coast is famous for its action and adventure sports and its budding eco-tourism industry. Days off are a perfect chance to unwind, recharge, and visit the ocean–maybe even learn to surf or kitesurf. This internship allows you the opportunity to enjoy life in a tropical, rural Dominican community while also increasing your knowledge and skills of aquaculture, agriculture, vermiculture, small-business management, and eco-tourism.

Incoming interns do not need any prior experience. It is recommended that interns have basic Spanish as the workers and locals do not speak English. However, many of our interns come down and find that the complete immersion helps them learn Spanish quickly.

Interns will work 35-40 hours a week Mon-Sa, but hours and days are flexible to allow for personal travel around the country. Interns will report to the intern coordinator who will work with our skilled workers to develop a personalized education plan. Interns will rotate between our aquaponics, permaculture, and packaging/distribution roles throughout their time here.

Our farm internships in the Dominican Republic run for a suggested length of 3 months. This gives interns an ample opportunity to learn about each facet of the farm as well as develop their own personal project to grow their resume and leave their mark here in Los Brazos. We do our best to accommodate any length of internship and specific learning objectives you may have.

The cost for the internship decreases with the length of your stay – the 1st month is $1200, 2nd month $1000 and the 3rd month is $800. Additional months are $600. Tuition for the internship covers educational supplies and training with our workers, accommodation in our rustic cabins, internet, basic food staples, and all produce grown on site. Please note: while we believe our price to be a fair representation of the costs that are put into each intern, we want this program to be accessible and understand that some people come from disenfranchised backgrounds and experience financial restrictions. If you have a strong interest in the program and believe you qualify for a discounted rate we encourage you to apply and inquire about potential discounts or scholarship application support.
