Native Farm Flowers Internship in Central New York – Summer 2020
Native Farm Flowers is a specialty cut flower farm. We are deeply committed to the production of the highest quality stems, bouquets and designs. We take great care to grow and harvest our flowers to ensure optimum vase life.
The 6 acre farm is located a few miles from Saratoga Springs in central New York. Saratoga has a vibrant history and exceptional summer offerings such its fabulous location close to the Adirondack Park and suburb summer events such as all things horses, the Saratoga Performing Arts venue and a lively downtown.
Barbara Jefts has been operating Native Farm since 1992 and has vast experience in both growing and event design. As an art major at the Rochester Institute of technology, Barbara has a unique perspective on her design work and does many weddings and events as well as one of the premier farmers markets in the northeast.
Native Farm Flowers is operated using organic practices but is not certified. There are three greenhouses and we grow woody perennials, perennials and annuals. We are members of the Association of Specialty Cut Flowers, a network of other flower farmers and designers across the nation.
This is a seasonal position that ideally starts in May and ends in mid October.
You will learn all aspects of running a sustainable flower farm, including propagating/planting, weeding, harvesting, bouquet making, market prep and customer interaction. You will be expected to eventually take ownership of some farm processes such as irrigation/fertility, high tunnel management and harvesting.
Qualifications
- previous experience in ornamentals, horticulture, gardening or flower farming
- positive, enthusiastic and inquisitive personality
- ability to work independently and as part of a team
- effective verbal and communication skills
- willingness and ability to perform physical tasks
- readiness to work in varied weather conditions
- valid divers license
We seek a person with a passion for farming and a particular interest in cut flower production and design.
The working week will consist of four days, three 6 hour week days and Saturdays. Comfortable housing on the farm is offered with this position. Added hours may be available with options such as work involving on farm classes, farmers markets, deliveries and event setup.
Compensation will be based on abilities.
