USDA Research Investments Explore Profitability & Viability of Small and Medium-Sized Farms

Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) announced awards totaling $5.8 million for 16 research projects that will support research on the continued profitability and viability of small and medium sized farms. AERC’s small and medium-sized farm research grants are focused on developing new models and technologies to help farmers increase their operations’ viability and competitiveness. There is also a particular focus within AERC on research into scaling up fruit and vegetable production, overcoming market constraints, and alternative crop and marketing enterprises.

Summer in Springfield

Earlier this month, nearly 100 NSAC members from across the country came together this month in Springfield, Illinois for NSAC’s annual Summer Meeting. This gathering is one of two opportunities each year for NSAC’s 130+ members to work together in person on the Coalition’s policy and grassroots priorities for the year, including: Agricultural Appropriations, Child Nutrition Act Reauthorization, Fairness in Livestock Competition, and 2018 Farm Bill Implementation.
