Field Work Podcast an Early Success
Field Work Podcast: Conventional Farmers, Sustainable Talk
The business of farming is changing fast and pressures on farmers are mounting, especially around stewardship of land and water. Many farmers are trying out practices promoted as having benefits to soil and water, but there’s a gap between the hype and farmers’ lived experiences with transitioning to these new techniques.
Field Work is a podcast in which commercial farmers share their own experiences with sustainable agriculture: what’s worked, but also what hasn’t, and why. The podcast builds the understanding and trust required before farmers will consider taking on the risk of changing time-honored practices. The podcast launched May 1 and has accumulated 100K+ listens and views in its first season.
The Field Work podcast focuses on practical topics such as tillage choices, the economics of nutrient management, cover crops, getting landlords on board with changes, and third crop models. The podcast centers on farmers, as both the experts of their own experiences and the intended audience. But anyone involved with sustainable agricultural practices for conventional farmers can find value and community within Field Work.
The hosts of the podcast are Midwest row-crop farmers, Zach Johnson and Mitchell Hora. These two co-hosts lead the conversations, letting their personalities shine through in ways that make for entertaining, as well as informative, listening.
Zach Johnson is a fifth-generation family farmer from Minnesota who grows 2,500 acres of corn and soybeans with his dad. He also has quite the online presence on his MN Millennial Farmer YouTube channel with over 200,000 subscribers. Zach can be found on twitter at @farmmillenial.
Mitchell Hora is a farmer and young entrepreneur from Washington, Iowa. His family has been farming in the area for over 100 years and has a strong focus on conservation. When Mitchell isn’t farming, he runs a consulting company called Continuum Ag. He also hosts a podcast focused on soil health. Mitchell can be found on twitter at @ContinuumAgLLC.
