Small Scale Organic Grain Production Course Online

Grain production is gaining ground in the Northeast and elsewhere on many scales. It can be a great new enterprise to add diversity to an existing farm, or the centerpiece of your farm's operations. A new 7-week online course, BF 140: Small-scale Organic Grain Production--facilitated by a young full-time organic grain farmer--will begin with a frank assessment of the challenges and economics of organic grains, and then move through cultural requirements, production, harvest, and post-harvest handling. Small Farms Program Cornell This course will rely on a hard copy book which needs to be purchased separately in advance of the class: The Organic Grain Grower: Small-Scale, Holistic Grain Production for the Home and Market Producer by Jack Lazor. Mr. Lazor will provide several real-time webinar presentations throughout the course. The remainder of the course webinars will feature other successful grain farmers from around the Northeast US. While anyone is welcome to register for this course, production-oriented topics will generally be most relevant to those living in a climate similar to NY. New this year! Participants who complete all requirements of one or more online courses are eligible to be endorsed for a 0% interest loan of up to $10,000 through Kiva Zip. The course, BF 140: Small-scale Organic Grain Production runs from Tues. Jan 14 - Feb 25, 2015 with Wednesday night webinars 7-8:30pm EDT. If you aren't able to attend in real time, webinars are always recorded and posted for later viewing.

All of our courses consist of weekly real-time webinars followed by homework, readings, and discussions on your own time in an online setting.

Each course is $200, but up to 4 people from the same farm may participate without paying extra. See the course description page for more on the course learning objectives, instructors, and outline. Please note that BF 140 registrants must also purchase the course textbook, The Organic Grain Grower: Small-Scale, Holistic Grain Production for the Home and Market Producer by Jack Lazor, which is not included in the registration fee.
