Organic Farm Internship in Louisiana
Farm internships on organic farm in Central Louisiana begins April/ May 2014
General Description:
We are looking for energetic, good-natured, skilled, knowledgeable and committed interns to help us at Inglewood Farm.
Interns will learn and be involved in all aspects of forage fed livestock, small grain production, and pecans. The internship will run for approximately 52 weeks, with a weekly stipend, housing, and vacation time.
We use biological methods to produce healthy chemical free nutrient dense foods. Kurt Klukas, our Manager of Organic Operations, has a decade of experience in organic production, but Inglewood will nevertheless provide interns with the opportunity to enable a sustainable farm to develop from the ground up. Our farm is 3500 acres, 500 of which are now dedicated to sustainable agricultural production, and 1550 of which are dedicated to providing a natural wildlife habitat. We are open to all races, creeds, ages, sexes, and sexual orientations.
Meals: Interns can cook together or independently depending on personality and diet.
Skills Desired:
• Tractor, Bush Hog and Good Mechanical skills for planting and tillage work.
• Animal Health Skills for work with cattle & hogs.
• Integrity, work ethic, self-motivation, problem solving, carpentry, animal husbandry.
• Applicants must be able to handle physically strenuous, repetitive tasks in all weather conditions, and must specifically have the ability to repetitively lift and carry a minimum of 50 pounds.
Educational Opportunities: Interns will learn business development, forage fed livestock management. Every day will be a learning experience but we will encourage our interns to visit other farms and attend at least one farm conference during the season.
Stipend: $300 per week plus housing.
Housing: Farmhouse on the property with a high speed internet connection
Internship Details: Interns experience every aspect of healthy, chemical-free crop and livestock production. We will generally work 50-60 hour weeks. Responsibilities may include: Feeding livestock, moving animals, mechanical troubleshooting, budget management, composting, preparing soil, seeding, cultivating, weeding, and constructing fences.
