Farming Internship in Hawaii
Farming Internship in Hawaii – 2017-18
The Hawai’i Institute of Pacific Agriculture farm is located along the beautiful, historic coast of North Kohala, on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Our main campus, Halawa Farm, is a 7-acre living and learning environment where we cultivate a diverse collection of native Hawai’ian and Polynesian plants, tropical fruit orchards and perennial vegetable crops, in addition to raising small scale poultry and livestock. The farm is the base of operations for our residential farmer training programs and educational workshops, and provides a steady supply of food and medicine to those on the land as well as our local farmers market.
Our residential Farmer Training programs include our Living Farm Internship (held in Spring and Fall), and our Living Roots Immersions. Courses are held on our main campus, Halawa Farm, on the beautiful King Kamehameha lands of Kapaau, Hawai’i. This 7-acre permaculture homestead serves as working farm, educational site and home to staff, apprentices and interns throughout the year. While living and learning with us, students explore a variety of topics related to sustainable agriculture, homestead farming, permaculture, agroforestry, soil fertility, plant medicine, nutrition, beekeeping, animals, mycology, community living, Hawai’ian arts and culture, and much more.
Farming Internship in Hawaii: Interns will engage in hands-on field time for an average of 25-30 hours per week and maintain responsibilities in areas to include, but not limited to: planting, harvesting, processing, garden and orchard maintenance (weeding, mulching, watering, etc.), nursery management, compost and humanure systems, dairy operations, care for chickens and ducks, food processing, meal preparation, and farmers markets.
