Social Care Farmer needed to work with a young man who has a diagnosis of autism as he builds a small-scale flower farm in western Chapel Hill. 

Care farming is the therapeutic use of farming practices to improve health, social, and vocational outcomes for vulnerable populations. The right candidate for this position will need to have

  • farming experience (preference given to candidates who have experience in organic flower farming)
  • excellent personal skills and a genuine interest in people
  • knowledge and experience working with young adults with autism
  • preference given to candidates who demonstrate familiarity with the principles of applied behavior analysis and the skillful use of positive reinforcement.

Most importantly, the right care farmer candidate will need to be passionate and committed to helping people fulfill their potential. Flexibility is essential and the candidate must be willing to undertake practical, purposeful activities in an outdoor environment in addition to assisting the individual in multiple social and vocational situations.

The care farmer position will involve providing assistance, supervision, and support to this young man as he learns to grow, cultivate, harvest, market, and deliver flowers, repair and maintain small farm equipment and tools, take part in managing a small agribusiness operation, in addition to developing other independent living and social skills. The work will be diverse, with lots of room for creativity and innovation. The ideal candidate for this work will be a self-starter, able to independently plan and organize a daily schedule, and consistently implement a reinforcement program across multiple environments.

Care farmer hours are part-time- Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 9am-3pm, and Saturday 10am-3pm. Hours may vary with the season. Pay starts at $17/hour. The position is permanent and subject to a 3-month probationary period.

We are a farm in development- currently growing on 1/8 acre, but in the process of cultivating 2 acres of a 4-acre lot next door. We may look small- but there is a lot of work to do!!
